ARCs Linkage International scheme expands by $2.9 million

The Australian Government has announced that it will invest a further $2.9 million in the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Linkage International scheme in order to enhance the participation of its researchers in international networks. Twenty new ARC International Fellowships will be funded allowing both Australian researchers to work in leading overseas institutions and researchers from other countries to come to Australia for periods of up to 12 months. Fellowships will fund outstanding postdoctoral, research or senior research fellows.

The awards build links between researchers, research teams and research centres of excellence in Australia and overseas by funding extended collaborations. The Government will fund 42 new awards for Australia-based researchers to participate in joint research projects with their overseas counterparts. The awards and fellowships will support collaborative research projects with benefits in a wide range of areas, including:

  • developing a waste water treatment system that will convert organic pollutants into harmless compounds (University of Technology, Sydney); developing size-controlled nanoparticles for direct methanol fuel cells, potential power sources for portable devices such as laptop computers and mobile phones (The University of Melbourne) and
  • developing advanced screening protocols for the identification of genes involved in nutrient sensing and nutrient efficiency in plants (The University of Adelaide).

These awards and fellowships will enable Australian researchers to work closely with partners from 18 different countries. Twelve of the fellowships will support Australian researchers collaborating with international partners under reciprocal exchange agreements with France, Germany, the Republic of Korea and Israel.
