The Australian Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (AMCRC) will develop next generation technology platforms with the help of a $35 million grant announced today by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP.

In the 2006 CRC Selection Round, the Australian Government gave in-principle approval for funding to AMCRC for world-class research and innovation, taking the government’s total funding for the 2006 Round to about $345 million.

“AMCRC will deliver new platform technologies across major industry sectors in Australia, including the defence, aerospace, biomedical, fine chemical, mining, energy and fabricated metal products sectors,” Minister Bishop said.

“This new CRC will be based in Melbourne and brings together universities, research organisations and the Australian advanced manufacturing industry to develop next generation technology platforms.”

AMCRC’s research will have a significant impact across all industry sectors, with an estimated $523 million in business activity to be realised over the seven years of Australian government investment in the CRC.

“The research undertaken by AMCRC will be vital to the development and delivery of cutting edge technologies that will keep our industries globally competitive and locally sustainable,” Minister Bishop said.

“Businesses will benefit from enhanced product quality and reliability, and a reduction in the cost of developing and manufacturing these products.”

AMCRC will also deliver an education and training programme to better equip professionals to identify and utilise new technologies.

The CRC Programme fosters innovation by promoting long-term strategic links and collaborations between researchers, industry and government.

The Australian Government is committed to investing in programmes that build our capacity in research, development and innovation for the long-term benefit of our nation.
