Workshop 1 - ICT - Enabling Science

A summary of responses from key Australian scientists, who have had a history of collaboration with European groups, is:

  • most important issue ... (common interest, sharing expertise/ideas, finding the right people, personal contact, the necessity of Australian ICT researchers to work with European platform technologies)
  • greatest impediment ... (lack of funding support, extremely difficult to locate appropriate industrial contact/support)
  • future concrete actions ... (European countries provide balanced support for Australian collaboration, easily accessible platform to handle funding, means to induce European industries into networking with collaborating scientists)

Presentations

Ambient Intelligence A primary focus of IST research - Dr Erastos Filos

Faraday to Pharos – a successful EU collaboration in radio-astronomy - Professor Ray Norris

Experiences with European Projects - Professor Aruna Seneviratne

Overview of the ICT Workshop and ICT in Australia - Professor Arun Sharma & Ms Fieny Reimann-Pijls

Experiences in the 5th Framework - Professor Ross Jeffery

Workshop 2 - Innovative Solutions to Drive Agricultural Sustainability

The general rationale for the organisation of the workshop has been that agricultural sustainability is possible only if farmers adopt sustainable practices. Hence there is considerable emphasis not only on the R&D that develops sustainable practices but also on the development of policy that fosters the adoption of such practices.

Presentations

Innovative solutions to drive agricultural sustainability - Dr Chris Patermann

The agricultural R&D operating environment in Australia - Mr John Harvey

Towards agricultural sustainability - Victoria, Australia - Anna Ridley, Gary Stoneham & Kim Lowe

Sustainable Dryland Farming in the Mallee of South Eastern Australia - John Leys

R&D to address sustainability issues in the Australian cotton industry - Greg Constable

Soil biology and its implications for sustainability - Dr Ulrich Schurr

Workshop 3 - Life Sciences, Genomics & Biotechnology for Health

To discuss practical strategies and outcomes to address (at least) the following questions:

  • what are the most important issues that enable successful collaboration between Australian and European scientists?
  • what are the greatest impediments to creating successful collaboration between Australian and European scientists?
  • what concrete actions would be needed to enhance networking and collaboration between Australian and European scientists?

Presentations

Workshop 3 Life Sciences, Genomics & Biotechnology for Health - Professor Edwina Cornish

Life Sciences, Genomics and Biotechnology for Health - Dr Tim Hall

BioFortification of Foods for  Health - Dr Roger Kalla

Stem Cell Sciences - Dr Hugh Ilyine

Australian-European Union Collaborative Grants - Ms Elizabeth Grant

Workshop 4 - Nanotechnologies and nanosciences, knowledge based multifunctional materials and new production processes and devices

One major outcome is to identify concrete actions (eg who and when?) to establish a communication hub between European and Australian nanotechnology groups, aiming to provide a single portal for access into both regions.
