There are eight Research Councils, established under Royal Charter. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has statutory control of the Councils, supported by the Director General of Research Councils, in the Office of Science and Technology (OST). The UK Research Councils are:

• Biotechnology & Biological Science Research Council (BBSRC);
• Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC);
• Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC);
• Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC);
• Medical Research Council (MRC);
• Natural Environment Research Council (NERC);
• Particle Physics & Astronomy Research Council (PPARC);
• Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
