SUMMARY:Rhodes Scholarships
DESCRIPTION:The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate award for study at the University
of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars may study any full-time postgraduate course over
two years that is offered by the university except for the MBA — whether
 a taught master’s programme or a research degree\; or a second
undergraduate degree (senior status). Rhodes Scholars are chosen by local
selection committees in each eligible country. Scholars are chosen for
their academic and all-round qualities on the evidence of testimonials from
responsible persons\, and after personal interview (which is indispensable)
by the selection committee concerned. After election\, application is made
on behalf of Rhodes Scholars for admission to individual colleges and
faculties in Oxford\, and the election is not confirmed by the Rhodes
Trustees until the Scholar-elect has been accepted for admission by a
college. Application regulations in detail are published for each country
and may be obtained from the local secretaries of the country. Rhodes
Scholars are selected from the following countries: Australia\, Bermuda\,
 Canada\, Commonwealth Caribbean\, Germany\, Hong Kong\, India\, Jamaica\,
 Kenya\, New Zealand\, Pakistan\, South Africa and neighbours (Botswana\,
 Lesotho\, Malawi\, Namibia\, Swaziland)\, USA\, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Applicants must have completed their first degree to a very high standard
by the time of arrival in Oxford. Exact terms of eligibility (age limit\,
residency\, etc.) vary according to country. University and college fees
are paid by the Rhodes Trust. In addition\, scholars receive a monthly
maintenance stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses. Currently
the maintenance stipend is set at €910 per month. The scholarship is for
 two years in the first instance\, though may be held for one year only\;
applications for a third year of scholarship (for those pursuing the DPhil)
are considered during the course of the second year.

SUMMARY:Marie Curie Initial Training Networks
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission has published a call for proposals under the
‘People’ section of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The call
relates to the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITNs)\, which are
intended to improve the career perspectives of early-stage researchers in
both the public and private sectors\, thereby making research careers more
attractive to young people. This will be achieved through a trans-national
networking mechanism\, aimed at structuring the existing high-quality
initial research training capacity throughout Member States and Associated
countries in both the public and private sectors. It will be implemented by
supporting competitively selected networks of organisations from different
countries engaged in research training. The networks will be built on a
joint research training programme\, responding to identified training needs
in defined scientific or technological areas\, with appropriate references
to interdisciplinary and newly emerging supra-disciplinary fields. The
action is primarily for researchers from Member States and Associated
countries\, but is also open to researchers from third countries. The
budget for the call is €185\,000\,000.

SUMMARY:Open Access and Research Conference 2008
DESCRIPTION:The way we create and disseminate knowledge has undergone profound change
over the last ten years. The capacity of ICT and the rise of a rich text\,
highly interactive\, user generated and socially active Internet (Web 2.0)
has seen linear models of knowledge production giving way to more diffuse
open ended and serendipitous knowledge processes. As a response we have
seen a worldwide move towards establishing frameworks in which we can
optimise access to and reuse of research especially that which is publicly
funded. This has been supported by the development of open access
repositories\, new publishing tools and models and more strategic
management of copyright at the individual and institutional level. QUT
along with many other institutions throughout the world has been a pioneer
in putting in place the management practices and necessary infrastructure
to promote access and innovation. We are proud to announce what we believe
will be a truly landmark conference that will draw on experts from
Australia and around the world to speak on a range of topics such as
 evolving publishing models\, repository management\, e-Research\, policy
development\, and legal and technical issues.

SUMMARY:Next COST Open Call
DESCRIPTION:As with previous successful collection dates this continuous call is
thematically open. COST invites proposals for Actions contributing to the
scientific\, technological\, economic\, cultural or societal development of
Europe. Proposals playing a precursor role for other European programmes
and/or initiated by early-stage researchers are especially welcome!
Proposers are invited to locate their proposal in one of the nine
scientific domains. Interdisciplinary proposals not fitting readily into a
single Domain are also welcome under the form of Trans-Domain Proposals
(TDPs). To find out more about the intended coverage of each of the 9
scientific Domains\, please visit the COST website. All proposals are
assessed in two stages. Preliminary Proposals\, consisting of a brief
overview and an impact description (maximum 1500 words/3 pages)\, are
checked for eligibility first and\, when eligible\, assessed by the
relevant Domain Committee against the published criteria. The top ranked
Preliminary Proposals are then invited to submit a Full Proposal which is
peer reviewed according to the published assessment criteria. The time
between the collection date and the proposal for approval of the best Full
Proposals by the COST CSO is approximately 6 months. COST — European
COoperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research — brings
together researchers and experts in different countries by setting up
networks (Actions) centred on nationally funded research projects\, which
are of interest to at least five COST countries. COST financially supports
activities such as meetings\, conferences\, short term scientific exchanges
and outreach activities in the range of €100\,000 per annum for normally
4 years. COST therefore does not fund research itself. Australian
participation Note that COST is open to Australian participation.
However\, Australian partners will need to source domestic funding to
support their engagement. In particular\, the Australian Academy of Science
administers a travel grant specifically to help Australians engage with
COST Actions. See www.science.org.au/internat/cost.htm for further details.

SUMMARY:ESF-COST High Level Research Conference on Systems Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Systems Chemistry is the joint effort of prebiotic and supramolecular
chemistry together with theoretical biology and complex systems research to
address problems relating to the origin and synthesis of life. The emerging
field can be viewed as the bottom up pendant of systems biology towards
synthetic biology. A major focus is laid on the study of autocatalytic
 reaction systems\, such as chemical self-replicating\, self-reproducing\,
and chiral symmetry breaking systems. The field aims at the construction of
dynamic supersystems embedding at least one autocatalytic subsystem.
Subsystems may be classified as genetic\, metabolic\, or
compartiment-building. Pairwise integration into higher organized
supersystems is expected to yield the knowledge enabling later the triple
integration into minimal chemical cells. Finding the chemical roots of
Darwinian evolvability is seen as a key challenge for the field. The
conference will convene internationally leading experts from various
relevant areas to elucidate where we stand in 2008. Facets from this
intriguing and truly interdisciplinary endeavour come from fields as
diverse as geochemistry and organocatalysis\, biomolecular chemistry and
liposome technology\, metal-organic chemistry and the theory of networks
and evolution. Joining these facets by the unifying principle of
autocatalysis leads to a new view which may be especially attractive for
the next generation of chemists. Time will be allotted to poster
 presentations.

SUMMARY:University Autonomy and The Globalization of Academic Careers
DESCRIPTION:It is often argued that in order to improve research and educational
performance universities should be given sufficient institutional autonomy
 — this includes financial and managerial autonomy\, academic and
scientific autonomy as well as organisational and staffing autonomy — and
that the academic market should be open and competitive. Such claims raise
many questions. How do higher education systems differ according to their
degree of autonomy and competition? Do differences in autonomy translate
into differences in performance? How important are different forms of
autonomy? How should public university academic contracts be determined?
Which universities are successful examples of ‘university autonomy’?
How should ‘autonomous public universities’ be made accountable? Which
policy reforms should be implemented in order to make universities
competitive in a globalized academic market? Why is it so difficult to
implement some of these policies? The one-and-a-half-day workshop will
focus on these\, and related\, issues with a special emphasis on the
potential — and the limitations — of university autonomy to open-up and
enhance academic careers in Europe\, in the context of an increasingly
 globalized academic market.

SUMMARY:Training-through-research fellowships in Luxembourg
DESCRIPTION:In order to consolidate the pool of human resources required to develop
research at the national level\, the Ministry of Culture\, Higher Education
and Research\, has put a programme of Training-through-research fellowship
in place. Grants are awarded to Luxembourg or foreign researchers
(generally in the framework of a doctorate or post-doctorate) for a maximum
of 3 years in order to conduct research within a public research centre\, a
public institution or a company (in Luxembourg or abroad). The project can
be basic or applied research without distinction of the field. It must be
supported by an organisation (public research centre\, service
organisation\, Luxembourg or foreign institute of higher education or
university) with expertise in the relevant R&D field and has a potential to
exploit research results at national level. The Training-through-research
fellowship takes the form of a lump sum: €1\,500/month at doctoral
level\; €2\,100/month at post-doctoral level. There is no limitation as
regards the themes and discipline of research financed under this scheme.
The only criteria are the scientific quality of the project and the
potential to exploit research results at national level.

SUMMARY:€1\,000 prize from the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences (Belgium)
DESCRIPTION:The academy is seeking submission of original work on the 6 selected topics
for 2009. For each topic (question)\, the award-winning work in the yearly
competition is granted a prize of €1\,000. The questions cover topics
very relevant to the Humanities and Social Sciences and Australian
excellence. Question 1 A study is requested on international contacts
(3rd c. BC - 3rd c. AD) in the southern Persian Gulf\, based on the pottery
evidence. Question 2 A study related to the state theories in the
contemporary Arab world is requested. Question 3 An analysis is requested
on the contributions of new technologies in remote sensing to the study of
desertification. Question 4 A study is requested in the field of applied
nutrition describing one or more interventions for preventing or treating a
nutritional problem\, or promoting sound nutrition in an overseas country.
Question 5A study is requested on flooding problems in overseas regions
subject to morphological changes which modify the flood conveyance capacity
of watercourses. These changes may be natural (soil erosion in the river
basins\, tectonics\, land subsidence etc)\, or anthropogenic (works to
 control the floods\, dams\, riverbed training\, water pumping\, sediment
extraction\, etc.). Question 6 A technical and economic study of
feasibility is requested on the renewable alternative energy that can be
applied in developing countries. The study may be about solar energy
(panels or photovoltaic)\, wind energy\, bioenergy (biogas or gas
generators)\, or mini-hydraulics. The study will include a technical
description of all the processes considered and comprise an estimate of the
investment\, operating and maintenance costs as compared e.g. with diesel
fuel energy production. How can these alternative energies contribute to
the reduction of deforestation and/or the use of cutting wood?

SUMMARY:11th Pacific Science Inter-congress: Pacific countries and their ocean
 facing local and global changes
DESCRIPTION:The 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress will be held in conjunction with
the 2nd Symposium on French Research in the Pacific. The goals of the
Inter-Congress are to: Assess problems and issues related to local and
global changes in countries and territories in the Pacific\, and how these
changes are linked to geographic location. Issues will be addressed from a
variety of scientific perspectives\, examining human\, social\, economic
and cultural considerations and emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Gather together scientists from the whole Asia-Pacific region. This is
important because all countries and territories in the Pacific Rim and
Basin face similar or linked problems that must be addressed both in the
larger countries as well as smaller island states and in coordination with
the other. Provide an opportunity to young scientists in the Pacific to
garner important experience and take part in stimulating intellectual
exchanges. Special financial and accommodation conditions will be set up
for doctoral and postdoctoral students. A total of approximately 50
scholarship grants of 500€ will be awarded to cover partial travel and
accommodation costs for the trip to Tahiti. Develop productive exchanges
between participants from the countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific
region and the communities in French Polynesia\, Wallis and Futuna and New
 Caledonia.

SUMMARY:8th International Symposium on Particle Image Velocimetry
DESCRIPTION:Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is nowadays the most used velocity
measurement technique in Fluid Mechanics. Its success bears from the fact
that it is multi-point\, based on simple concepts\, requires minimal
calibration\, is accurate and with little intrusiveness. Given its
widespread development\, the Symposia on PIV are continuing to be a forum
for users\, experts and developers. Following the successful previous
Symposia in Fukui (1995\, 1997)\, Santa Barbara (1999)\, Göttingen
(2001)\, Busan (2003)\, Pasadena (2005) and Roma (2007)\, the main
objective of the Symposium is to bring together users and experts in PIV in
a friendly\, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Discussions during
presentations\, poster sessions and round tables are encouraged and will
support the usual oral presentations. Invited lectures by experts will
introduce recent developments of the technique and its applications. An
exhibition of the most major companies in the fields of PIV\, image
processing\, image acquisition and analysis\, lasers and optics\, photo and
video cameras will take place in parallel with the Symposium.
