SUMMARY:1-ICAUD: First International Conference on Architecture and Urban Design
DESCRIPTION:Over the past twenty years\, Tirana\, the capital of Albania\, has evolved
into a dense\, compact\, and vibrant city of almost one million people\,
 full of shops\, cafes\, restaurants\, music\, colorful buildings\, and
street life. At the same time\, it is choked with automobile traffic\, its
older façades are crumbling down\, and the traditional housing stock is
being eroded to make room for condominium buildings. Sustainable
construction technologies are in their infancy. High-tech high-rise
architecture is juxtaposed with small scale informal additions to
communist-era housing units and pre-communist oriental and Western
neoclassic homes. While there is much private wealth in the country\, the
public sector has limited resources. This set of circumstances makes Tirana
a very interesting laboratory for architects and urban designers &
planners\, and an enjoyable place to visit.

situated in the middle of an area of undisputable beauty\, which exhibits
the environmental quality that we have to preserve for future generations.
Moreover\, it is located in a rather small distance from Stagira\, the
birthplace of Aristotle\, and Mount Athos. Aristotle contributed decisively
to the formation of scientific thought\, while Mount Athos represents the
spirit and the moral discipline\, which are indispensable for the
restoration of the environment. The conference is timely\, too. In the
middle of a financial crisis\, it serves as a reminder that protection of
the environment is not a luxury\, that could be temporarily disregarded\,
but a basic prerequisite for a viable future.

SUMMARY:Governing City Futures
DESCRIPTION:‘Population’ has been an abiding preoccupation in the settlement of the
Australian continent. It has never been a fixed concept\, but one capable
of promiscuous connotations and discursive articulations. It has featured
in debates about the balance between the City and the Bush\; the
appropriate ‘racial’ composition of the nation\; about fertility\,
 families and the role of women\; about development and economic growth\;
and\, in particular\, about the rules around immigration and the nature and
prerogatives of the nation state. Globalization and the rise of the
environmental movement\, however\, have changed the terms in which we
discuss the idea of population. It is a key concept in global debates about
planetary sustainability\, climate change mitigation and adaptation\, the
curtailment of human freedoms in response to uncontrolled population
movements and potential struggles over resources. In Australia recent
asylum seeker debates and the emerging issue of environmental refugees have
sparked conflicts over the question of what is an optimal national
population with regard to economic growth and the continent’s carrying
capacity. In recent times\, in Australia as elsewhere population has
become associated with urban problems and their management. It is a key
concept in expert debates about desirable models of urbanity – low
density urbanism\, consolidation\, sustainability and so on – and about
patterns of urban consumption and infrastructure such as transport\,
water\, energy and food security and carbon emissions. The prospect of
increased population sparks populist defences of the suburban dream and the
‘Australian way of life’ and triggers fears about the impact of
demographic change on housing\, on traffic congestion\, and on
environmental resources. Those seeking to challenge parochialism argue for
a human rights perspective and a recognition that climate change is a
global issue that refuses the notion of national borders and protectionist
mentalities and is one that necessarily requires urban solutions to adjust
humanity to its new biospheric conditions. Centrally important in
contending with Australia’s urban future\, the notion of population
serves at once as a statistical object of social scientists\, a field of
intervention for urban planners\, a rhetorical resource for politicians and
activists\, and a spectre haunting a popular imaginary concerned with the
imperilment of the suburban everyday. This conference asks: What is the
future of the low density city? What are its prospects in a context in
which ecological and population pressures make the infrastructure that
under-grid such cities no longer sustainably\, if it ever was? In the wake
of these intersecting pressures\, how are alternate futures for this urban
form to be imagined and governed? How are its populations to be managed?
Individual lives conducted? Resources circulated? How do these questions
impact of relations of gender\, ethnicity\, and class and those between
City and Bush? In addressing these questions this conference will bring
together international and Australian academics\, politicians and other
expert speakers and commentators in the fields of cultural studies\, urban
sociology\, urban infrastructure and population to discuss the future of
the low density city in an era in which climate change and the prospect of
population increase operates as a major challenge to established forms of
 urban life.

SUMMARY:Eco-Architecture 2012
DESCRIPTION:The Fourth International Conference on Harmonisation between Architecture
and Nature will take place on 5 to 7 September 2011 in Kos\, Greece. The
development of eco-architecture is driven by the depletion of natural
resources and the need to preserve the balance of nature. It provides
imaginative and expressive solutions and is characterised by the generation
of highly creative designs. Eco-architecture also makes every effort to
minimise the use of energy at each stage of the building’s life cycle\,
including that embodied in the extraction and transportation of materials\,
their fabrication\, their assembly into the building and ultimately the
ease and the value of recycling when a building’s life is over.
Architecture and design inspired by eco-architecture take into
consideration the use of energy in building maintenance\, as well as
lighting\, heating and cooling. Substantial savings\, for example\, can be
achieved by the choice of materials appropriate for passive energy
systems\, while renewable energy resources can provide heating and electric
power. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for discussing the
 many relevant aspects of eco-architecture including:   design with nature\;
ecological and cultural sensitivity\; design by passive systems\; life
cycle assessment\; quantifying sustainability in architecture\; resource
and rehabilitation\; building technologies\; ecological impact of
materials\; durability of materials\; adapted reuse\; carbon neutral
 design.

SUMMARY:Terrestrial Environment — Fauna
DESCRIPTION:A relatively small call from New Caledonia’s CNRT and open to Australian
participants. This call\, with exposure to industry and international
partners\, could be a great opportunity for an early career researcher.
The objective of the “CNRT Nickel et son environnement” (CNRT Nickel
and Its Environment) Public Interest Grouping (GIP) is to provide support
to research and technology development programmes for improving mineral
resource management compatibly with natural and human environment
conservation and development. The objective of these calls for project
tenders is to provide a scientific response to the Territory\, Provinces
and mining companies’ demand for consultancy work through applied
research with a high training/transfer component so as to promote the
mining industry while preserving the Territory’s outstanding natural
heritage and environmental quality compatibly with sustainable economic
co-development. On the basis of this collectively agreed objective\, calls
for project tenders have been defined under three interrelated headings\,
ie “Nickel and Technology”\, “Nickel and Society” and “Nickel and
the Natural Environment”. The calls for tenders in these three areas are
supported by indicative funding which will be allocated yearly or over
several years for operating or staffing costs. Successful tenders will be
co-funded or fully funded by CNRT\, depending on its allocated budget.

SUMMARY:ERC Advanced Investigators Grant
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission has published a call for European Research Council
Advanced Investigators Grants. Pursuing non-conventional or high-risk
research projects is a well recognised way to promote major scientific
advances but many funding agencies find it difficult to set aside
significant amounts of funding for this purpose. European Research Council
(ERC) Advanced Grants are intended to promote substantial advances in the
frontiers of knowledge\, and to encourage new productive lines of enquiry
and new methods and techniques\, including unconventional approaches and
investigations at the interface between established disciplines. By
awarding grants on a competitive basis solely on the criterion of
excellence the ERC will establish clear benchmarks for quality which will
help to raise the level of all European research. In these ways the grants
will complement and add value to existing funding schemes and investments
at the national and European levels. As well as leading researchers
already established in Europe\, recipients are expected to include
returnees from the European ‘diaspora’ who wish to establish themselves
in Europe. Additionally\, the ERC is particularly keen to encourage
excellent proposals which involve the establishment of a new research
activity in the EU or the associated countries by a principal investigator
who is moving from a third country into the EU or the associated countries.
ERC Advanced Grants are open to excellent established researchers of any
nationality who have a recent research track-record which identifies them
as leaders in their respective field of research. Grants amount to up to
€3.5 million for up to five years.

SUMMARY:FP7 ICT: Future Emerging Technologies open call (FET-Open)
DESCRIPTION:Radically new ideas can come anytime\, from anybody and from anywhere. They
obviously do not necessarily fit within predefined topical calls\, nor are
they comfortable with strict submission deadlines. FET-Open is specifically
designed to be open and responsive to such fresh courageous thinking. It
aims to give promising but still fragile ideas the opportunity to mature
into a credible and well-founded new direction of research. What is common
to all objectives under FET-Open is that they seek proposals on radically
new concepts and visions of the nature and use of information and
information technologies\, grounded in scientifically plausible and often
inter-disciplinary ideas on how to achieve them. In spite of the high risk
of failure\, FET-Open projects can be the first step on the way towards
future European scientific and industrial leadership in areas that today
simply do not exist yet. The FET-Open scheme is unique in that it applies
a two step submission process in which short proposals of maximum 5 pages
can be submitted at anytime. Only proposers of the most promising ideas are
then invited to submit a full proposal. This design makes the scheme highly
responsive while the overhead for the proposing consortium in case of
failure to pass the evaluation is minimized.

SUMMARY:EU Culture Program
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission’s Culture Programme was established to promote
international mobility of those working in the cultural sector\, to
encourage the transnational circulation of cultural and artistic output\,
and to foster intercultural dialogue. To facilitate cultural cooperation
beyond Europe\, the European Commission designates funds for cooperation
projects with Third Countries. For 2013\, these funds can be used by
Australian cultural organisations in collaboration with European partners.
Cooperation Projects aim to help cultural operators\, such as theatres\,
 museums\, professional associations\, research centres\, universities\,
cultural institutes and public authorities from participating European
countries (1) to cooperate\, so that different sectors can work together
and extend their cultural and artistic reach across borders. Previous
examples of Projects have ranged from promoting cultural dialogue through
 fashion\, puppetry\, and music\, to photography festivals\, literary
 projects\, theatre and dance projects.
