SUMMARY:Science Foundation Ireland: Principal Investigator Programme Grant
DESCRIPTION:Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) advances national scientific progress by
awarding grants for research on a competitive basis in those fields of
 science\, engineering\, software engineering\, computer science\, and
mathematics that underpin biotechnology and information and communications
technology. SFI Principal Investigator Programme grants support fields of
science and engineering that underpin biotechnology and information and
communications technology. The grants are tenable in Ireland’s public
research bodies\, including universities and institutes of technology. PI
grants may range from €50\,000 to €1 million (direct costs) per year
and may be up to five years in duration. Typical grants\, however\, will be
in the range of €50\,000 to €250\,000 (direct costs) per year and will
normally be up to four years in duration. Researchers with exceptional
track records may apply for awards of up to €1 million (direct costs) per
year for up to five years. SFI funding supports the research programme
costs of the principal investigator and their research group. Eligible
costs include the following: Relevant research expenses\, including
 personnel\, equipment\, consumables\, collaboration\, and travel
Contributions to salaries for staff hired specifically to carry out the
research programme Access to necessary special facilities\, such as
synchrotron beam lines or high-speed computing In addition to the direct
costs\, SFI also makes an overhead contribution to the host research bodies
as part of the Overhead Investment Plan (OIP) programme. OIP awards are a
contribution to the research body for the indirect costs of hosting SFI
funded research programmes and are intended to enable the research bodies
to develop internationally competitive research infrastructure and support
services. All applicants will be expected to have a proven record of
internationally recognised independent research accomplishments and to have
at least three years of independent research experience beyond the PhD or
equivalent. An applicant may be a member of the academic staff
(permanent or with a contract that covers the period of the grant)\, or a
contract researcher recognised by the research body as an independent
investigator who will have an independent office and research space at the
host research body for which he or she will be fully responsible for at
least the duration of the SFI grant\, or an individual who will be
recognised by the research body upon receipt of the SFI grant as a contract
researcher as defined above. Applicants may submit a single proposal or
one in collaboration with other academics or researchers.
