description

The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) calls for participation in Stream Eleven of its research program. Stream Eleven - International Visiting Fellowships will provide the opportunity for eligible groups to bid for funds to support the travel and related costs of bringing international primary health care experts to Australia to contribute to the knowledge base and research capacity relevant to APHCRI’s strategic plan.

The Research Advisory Board (RAB) anticipates that during the course of APHCRI’s extension funding (until February 2010) it will be possible for 14 to 15 International Visiting Fellows to visit Australia and that between them, there would be visits to most parts of the country.

Travel to Canberra by the International Visiting Fellow is mandatory, and will include a public presentation at the ANU, and, whenever possible, based on the Department of Health and Ageing’s commitments, a meeting with relevant parts of the department. The Research Advisory Board considers this stream valuable in order to build and strengthen research linkages.

Potential opportunities that the RAB would like to see develop include the following:

  1. Increased opportunities for primary health care researchers and policy makers to confer with international experts in primary health care
  2. International Visiting Fellows raising awareness of key primary health care issues through available media opportunities
  3. The potential for International Visiting Fellows to visit more than one location
  4. International Visiting Fellows engaging in training workshops
  5. Increased opportunities for junior and mid-career researchers to establish links with international research groups

The RAB has determined that successful International Visiting Fellowships cannot be used purely for conference attendance. Applications will be required to document the proposed benefits of the visit over and above what could be considered as core business (such as conference attendance).

This research stream allows groups to bid for funds not exceeding $20,000. Host institutions will contribute to the cost of the program in order to encourage true partnership through co-contribution. In general the host institution would agree to contribute a minimum of 25% (cash or in kind). Although matching funding is an important aspect of this program, there would be flexibility to allow smaller sponsor organisations to be included in Stream 11.

The travel and associated costs of hosting the visitor, plus costs associated with the presentation in Canberra, will also be funded by the fellowship. The fellowship does not provide support for attendance at conferences. Due to the current funding agreement all travel must be completed by December 2009.
