The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation or DFG) is the central, self-governing research organisation that promotes research at universities and other publicly financed research institutions in Germany. The DFG serves all branches of science and the humanities by funding research projects and facilitating cooperation among researchers.
Research funding at national level always implies a dimension of international cooperation. Thus, all funding programmes of the DFG permit scientists and scholars in Germany to participate in international research projects.
A substantial proportion of the research activities funded by the DFG in its various programmes has an international dimension either because the projects are being carried out abroad and/or in collaboration with scholars in other countries. In order to facilitate research of a bilateral nature the DFG has concluded agreements of scientific cooperation with more than 50 partner organizations in 18 European and 21 overseas countries.
Though different in size and scope, these agreements or MoU’s typically aim at creating institutional feed back mechanisms to enhance the complementary funding of joint research projects and other scientific activities, such as workshops and exploratory missions. Foreign researchers interested in possibilities of cooperation within these agreements should in the first instance approach the respective organization in their own country for detailed information. In absence of relevant agreements, collaborative activities may be supported in an analogous way provided that the necessary co-support can be secured from funds of a national science agency.
Only researchers from research institutions in Germany may apply to the DFG for funds to pursue research projects.
