description

This scheme is part of the ESRC’s suite of fellowship opportunities aimed at promoting excellence in social science research. The scheme is open to all social science disciplines; interdisciplinary research is particularly encouraged.

The fellowships are intended to enable outstanding researchers to develop their careers in UK academia by taking their research in a new direction or to a new level. Applications are welcome from academics seeking support for a programme of work, based on a specific research question, linked to substantive career development. Applications are also welcome from researchers seeking to move into academic research from professional practice in an allied field, enabling them to complete a PhD if required.

During 2008-2009 the ESRC would encourage applications from the following disciplinary areas:

  • Advanced quantitative methods
  • Area studies
  • Economics
  • Education
  • Management and business studies
  • Social work
  • Socio-legal studies

The fellowships are aimed at individuals with between 5 and 15 years’ active postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience.

There are no nationality restrictions on who may apply for a fellowship.

Awards will be made for two years and, in exceptional circumstances, for three years. Applicants can apply for either full- or part-time awards to fit in with other research activity or with more flexible working patterns.

The fellowship limit is currently set at £250,000 (at full economic costing).
