The British Heart Foundation’s (BHF’s) expectation is that its professors appointed to recognized UK centres of excellence will bring research leadership at an internationally competitive level and a commitment to training future cardiovascular scientists. How the proposed candidate supports and enhances the university’s overall cardiovascular research strategy and the added value to the BHF of making the award are also important considerations.
The applicant must be a senior research leader with an established international reputation, a substantial output of high impact research papers, and a long-term track record of attracting significant peer-reviewed research grant income as principal investigator.
The duration of the grant is normally up to 10 years, subject to a satisfactory site visit and review after five years, and an undertaking that the university will take over the professor’s salary thereafter.
BHF will continue to support the professor’s research endeavours beyond 10 years through its various funding streams subject to satisfactory peer review of progress and future plans.
The award may include the following:
- Salary of applicant - for non-clinicians, up to the standard maximum level on the non-clinical professorial scale; for clinicians, normally 10 PAs on the consultant scale
- Justified annual core support, and necessary start-up funds
- In exceptional cases the BHF may be prepared to consider an additional Infrastructure Grant (refer to website) to facilitate establishment of the chair
