Due: this is perpetual, applications may be submitted at any stage
Organisation: Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung

description

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) offers, through the Feodor Lynen Programme, an opportunity to highly qualified German scholars from all academic disciplines to carry out long-term research projects (one to four years) at institutes outside Germany. The host must be a foreign scholar formerly sponsored by the foundation (research fellow or research award winner).

Applications may be submitted either on the recommendation of an academic host abroad or on the candidate’s own initiative. In general, contact with host institutes should be established by candidates themselves. On request, the AvH can inform candidates whether a host is a guest-researcher sponsored by the foundation or whether a former Humboldt guest-researcher is working at the envisaged institute.

The fellowships are open to German scholars from all disciplines who have successfully completed their doctorate less than four years ago, with excellent or very good ratings; can furnish proof of work published in recognised academic journals; can submit a research plan agreed with the host, including confirmation that research facilities can be made available; possess a good knowledge of the host country’s language or at least a very good knowledge of English, provided they can carry out their research project in that language; and are younger than 38 years.

Candidates who have nearly completed their doctoral degrees are eligible to apply provided that they submit the manuscript of their dissertation or publications containing the results of their dissertation.

The applicant may not have spent an extended period in the host country prior to application. Applications to continue a research stay already underway can only be considered in exceptional cases.

Applicants for a Feodor Lynen Fellowship who have been staying abroad for a lengthy period of time prior to submission of applications must contact the AvH before sending in their applications, as there may be formal reasons against application.

The provisions of the fellowship comprise a basic monthly sum and a monthly foreign allowance which may differ according to location and marital status. Marital and child allowances may be paid in addition.
