description

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation or DFG) is the central, self-governing research organisation that promotes research at universities and other publicly financed research institutions in Germany. The DFG serves all branches of science and the humanities by funding research projects and facilitating cooperation among researchers.

Within the individual grants programme, DFG awards more than 1,000 Research Fellowships per year.

Research Fellowships enable young researchers to carry out a clearly defined research project at a place of their choice in Germany or abroad and so acquaint themselves with new scientific research methods or to complete a larger research project.

The majority of fellowship holders go abroad. There is a variety of fellowship programmes catering for various stages of an academic career, including the highly visible Heisenberg fellowships, a career development award designed to promote highly qualified future faculty.

DFG has no individual pre-doctoral fellowship scheme, but graduate students may receive support in graduate colleges.

Young German researchers of all disciplines who have completed their academic qualifications (doctorate) may apply.

The fellowships are also open to young international researchers of all disciplines who have completed their scientific training (doctorate) provided they have been resident in Germany for several years and meanwhile have their centre of life in Germany (for fellowships available for research abroad or in Germany). Otherwise proposals may only be submitted for research fellowships in Germany. In both cases, international researchers will be required to state that they wish to continue to do their research in Germany in the future.

Exceptionally, older researchers holding a doctorate may submit proposals to allow them to dedicate themselves to a research project of particular importance.

The fellowships provide a basic fellowship plus monthly lump sum payment to cover maintenance and travel costs, and where applicable, foreign allowance, travel allowance, married persons allowance, day care allowance, and publication costs.

The funding period may generally be up to two years; in the case of partial fellowships, extensions are generally possible for up to a maximum of two years, depending on the degree of fellowship reduction.
