description

While the Australian Synchrotron (AS) provides world class facilities for the majority of Australian scientists requiring synchrotron access, it is recognized that certain methods are not currently available in Australia, and others are not planned for the near future. Accordingly, the AS has established the International Synchrotron Access Program (ISAP) to provide travel support to overseas synchrotron facilities, including the emerging fourth generation X-ray sources.

If the International Program Advisory Committee (IPAC) assesses that the experiment cannot be performed within Australia it will provide travel and subsistence support for the experiment to be undertaken, subject to sufficient funds being available and that the experiment is scheduled by the international facility. Priority will be given to projects that are deemed by IPAC to be of strategic importance to the development of Australian research community; IPAC includes scientific excellence as one of its strategic priorities.

Objectives if the program are

  • to provide funding for access to international synchrotron facilities by Australian researchers;
  • to ensure that the funding produces the greatest benefit for the Australian research community; and
  • to develop Australian awareness and expertise in emerging synchrotron methodologies and ideas.

Preference will be given to a proposal if the IPAC determines that it is likely to make a substancial strategic contribution to the development of Australian research. No more than one proposal will be considered from a research group per quarter.

The maximum allowable funding grant is $12,900. You must not exceed this funding level. Travel and accommodation funding will be provided where the IPAC determines that

  • a proposal has been recommended for beamtime by the appropriate review committee of a synchrotron facility;
  • the experiment cannot be performed at the Australian Synchrotron, and a strong scientific case has been made for the work; and
  • sufficient funds are available for the three-month period in which the experiment will be performed.

Where the demand exceeds the available funds, the IPAC shall rank proposals and determine which will be supported for that quarter.
