description

Project grants provide funding for high-quality, hypothesis-driven projects, in the basic and clinical sciences, that are relevant to human and animal health.

The Wellcome Trust’s funding streams are as follows:

  • Immunology and infectious disease
  • Populations and public health
  • Neuroscience and mental health
  • Physiological sciences
  • Molecules, genes and cells

The funding committees consider programme grant applications from principal investigators based in the UK or the Republic of Ireland who have a strong track record of obtaining grant support from the trust or other organisations. Programme grants can also be used to support international collaborations between universities in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and overseas institutions. Collaborations with developing or restructuring countries are particularly encouraged. The centre of gravity of the programme should be within the UK or Republic of Ireland.

Support can be requested for up to three years, although longer periods of time may be considered if scientifically justified (eg, for epidemiological studies).

Three-year project grant awards are usually in the region of £150,000 to £350,000.
