The aim of this fund is to provide essential short-term travel and related support for research programmes where beam time has been scheduled and approved by peer review at a Programme Advisory (PAC) or similar committee, but funds to travel to and perform the experiment do not exist elsewhere. The fund is not restricted to experimental research; theorists are eligible to apply where there is an analogous need for travel support for a time-critical research activity.
The available funding is limited and if funded, the award will cover the essential costs associated with the research activity. This may include T&S, consumables (e.g. isotopic material), and running costs where the facility requires these to be paid at the point of access. Applicants may apply for academic time for the period of the experiment, and associated estates and indirect costs. PDRA posts and studentships may not be requested via this mechanism, nor should travel for students be requested.
Applications for support for work on rolling grant themes, standard grants, PRD and project grants currently funded by STFC will not be considered for this scheme. Work on unfunded themes, or new initiatives for which funds could not reasonably have been sought at the time of the most recent grants round, will be eligible.
