description

The purpose of this category is to foster a supportive environment for professional development, research, and creative risk-taking. Support is available to individual writers and picture book illustrators through overseas residencies and to organisations through programs and services that contribute to the professional skills base of writers or the development of the literature sector overall.

Individuals who meet the eligibility requirements may apply for the following:

  1. Six-month residency at either the Keesing Studio in Paris, or the B.R. Whiting Library in Rome: In accordance with the conditions under which the board administers the B.R. Whiting Library in Rome, preference will be given to Australian poets.
  2. One three-month or one six-week residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in County Monaghan, Ireland
  3. Two-month residency at Ledig House, Art Omi International Arts Centre in Columbia County, New York: The Literature Board candidate for this residency may be required to submit a separate application to the Ledig House Advisory Board.

The Literature Board provides support to eligible organisations for projects that focus on professional development for writers or the literature sector overall. This includes, but is not limited to, participatory conferences, workshops, masterclasses, mentorship programs, and other professional development projects. The participants in these activities must be selected on the basis of their previous writing or editing experience and work with experienced tutors or mentors.

The Literature Board defines "participatory conferences" as those that involve the active participation of writers through individual or group training or discussion and assessment of the participating writers' work. Organisations with proposals for literary events with a public audience should apply to the Presentation and Promotion category. Please note that within the one application, organisations may apply for assistance towards a maximum of two projects.
