There will be no round held in 2009 for the Competitive Grants of the ISL Program. The ISL programme supports Australian scientists, from both the public and private sectors, to collaborate with international partners, including European Framework Programmes, on leading edge science and technology.


The ISL programme supports Australian scientists, from both the public and private sectors, to collaborate with international partners on leading edge science and technology in order to contribute to Australia’s economic, social and environmental wellbeing. As part of this package $55.5 million over five years will be provided to support international collaboration through the programme.

Applications will be accepted from Australian researchers, project managers, private companies and organisations, such as education institutions, Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs), industry groups and Commonwealth scientific agencies (eg, CSIRO). Consortia of these may also apply.

The International Science Linkages (ISL) programme provides support for: Australian researchers to participate in strategically focussed, leading edge, international scientific research and technology collaborations; Staging major international scientific conferences in Australia; Access to world leading international research facilities, networks and programmes through international exchanges, fellowships, missions and workshops; and Australia’s bilateral and multilateral science and technology relations with other governments.

    1. (suspended in 2009) Competitive Grants provides support, on a competitive basis, for excellent, researcher-initiated, international science and technology cooperation and related activities which meet the objectives of the ISL programme. Activities eligible for support under Competitive Grants include: international collaborative scientific research and technology projects and related activities (including support for Australians participating in European Union Framework programme research projects); staging major international scientific conferences in Australia (funding up to $50,000 may be sought); showcasing Australia’s scientific research and technology capabilities; and participation in international strategic planning activities for major international collaborative scientific projects.
    2. The Australia-China Fund provides support, on a competitive basis, for Australian participation in international collaborative scientific and research projects which draw on the complementary strengths of Australia and China and which meet the objectives of the ISL programme. Activities eligible for support under the Australia-China Fund include: international networking activities; and showcasing Australia’s science and technology capability. Under the Australia-China Fund, the Australian Government will contribute up to $500,000 per call for applications.
    3. The FAST programme provides support, on a competitive basis, to promote and support scientific and technological cooperation between Australian and French researchers in both the public and private sectors, drawing on complementary strengths in both countries and which met the objectives of the ISL programme. Activities eligible for support under FAST include: small strategically focussed workshops between Australian and French researchers in leading edge areas of research; and joint collaborative research project between Australian and French researchers, including project specific follow-up meetings. Under the FAST Programme, the Australian Government will contribute up to $250,000 per call for applications. (See SPIN Program #78555).

The Strategic Policy component of the ISL programme promotes effective research collaboration by providing a vehicle for the Australian Government to establish, reinforce and leverage strategic links and relationships with overseas counterparts. Strategic Policy is not an open application scheme and there is no formal call for proposals.
  2. International Science and Technology Networks complements Competitive Grants and Strategic Policy by providing targeted support for specific activities using the networks and expertise of particular organisations. Support under the ISTN is only available from the outsource agencies.
