description

Award winners, scientists and scholars from all non-European countries, are invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at one of the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany. The stay may be divided up into blocks.

Scientists and scholars from all non-European countries, who completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago, who are internationally recognised for their achievements in the field of applied research, and who in future are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements which will have a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work, are eligible to be nominated for a Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award.

Nominations may be submitted by the heads of institutes or senior academics at institutes belonging to the Fraunhofer Society. Direct applications are not accepted. Nominating scientists/scholars must be able to provide sufficient non-financial resources, equipment, and/or access to archives and libraries in order that the nominee may conduct the collaborative research project in Germany. German hosts are expected to arrange all necessary preparations for the awardee’s research stay in Germany (e.g., accommodations).

The award is valued at €45,000. The awards are exempt from taxation in Germany.

In addition, the following services will be provided to the awardees within the framework of an invitation to conduct research in Germany:

  • A single lump sum to cover expenses for round trip travel between the country of origin of the Awardee and Germany, for the awardee, his/her spouse, and children under the age of 18, provided that they reside with the awardee in Germany for at least 6 months
  • Financial assistance for the awardee and his/her spouse to attend an intensive German language course
  • Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award Winners are integrated in the Humboldt Foundation’s support programme for foreign guest researchers

The Humboldt Foundation and the Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research jointly grant up to three Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Awards annually.
