description

The Climate and Land-Surface Systems Interaction Centre (CLASSIC) is a NERC Collaborative Centre funded under the Earth Observation Centres of Excellence programme. Hosted at the University of Wales Swansea, CLASSIC brings together a consortium of researchers from the NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology at Wallingford and Monks Wood, the Universities of Durham, Exeter and Leicester, and the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research.

The principal goal of CLASSIC is to reduce uncertainty in assessing the actual and potential effects of climate change through an improved understanding of the feedback mechanisms that exist between the land surface and the atmosphere. This will be achieved through the development of improved land-surface schemes and dynamic vegetation models, within both global and regional climate models, that fully reproduce these interactions and that can be driven by dynamic, spatially comprehensive data on the terrestrial biosphere, such as those provided from Earth observation.

An important element of CLASSIC is the participation of key scientists from institutions other than the core consortium. CLASSIC has funds to cover travel and subsistence to allow a number of individuals to spend a period of up to 12 months visiting one or more of the consortium members for collaborative research and involvement in the CLASSIC seminar and workshop series.
