Due: Tuesday 1st October 2013   (this is perpetual, applications due on 1st February and 1st October every year)
Organisation: Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

description

Three times a year, the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards PhD scholarships for activities concerned with basic research and aimed at acquiring new scientific knowledge. The foundation supports projects aimed at elucidating basic phenomena of human life. Biotechnological development and studies on the course of diseases or the treatment of symptoms are not supported.

The main criteria for approval or rejection are the scientific quality reflected by the applicant’s achievements to date, the originality of the PhD project, and the scientific standard of the laboratories in question.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards approximately 15 PhD scholarships, three times per year. With an award rate of about 15 percent, only the best 5% of any one year will be selected.

The grant expires if not taken up within six months. PhD scholarships are granted for 24 months and can be extended for up to another 12 months.

Irrespective of the scholar’s age, the basic monthly grant amounts to €1,400. In Switzerland, the USA, and the United Kingdom €500 are added as a compensation for purchasing power. Depending on the cost of living, all other countries are grouped into one of these three categories. All scholars are paid an additional flat-rate sum of €100 per month to cover minor project-related costs (books, travelling expenses, etc.) and premiums for personal insurance. A spouse allowance may be added; child allowance is not paid. Tuition or bench fees are not taken over. The grants do not cover insurance; grant-holders must insure themselves and their families against any possible costs and consequences incurred by illness, accident, personal liability, etc.

The grant is intended to cover the living expenses of the recipient, who is therefore expected not to receive regular personal income from other research-sponsoring institutions or research institutes while receiving a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds grant.

Applicants should not be older than 27 years. Nationality is irrelevant. Citizens of European countries are supported in Europe or overseas; non-Europeans receive support when working in Europe.

Natural scientists may apply after having submitted a diploma or an equivalent thesis; physicians, veterinary surgeons, and pharmacists should have passed the state examinations.

At the application deadline the applicant should not have worked on his or her project for longer than six months. The beginning of the PhD project is considered to be:

  1. the date of the final examination (eg., diploma, MSc, BSc, DEA) on the official certificate when the applicant continues to work in the same research group; or
  2. the month of arrival in the laboratory in which the PhD project is pursued when the applicant changes his or her research project and research group.

In other cases, ie. when participating in MSc/PhD programmes or graduate schools without an official final examination prior to the PhD project, applicants should contact the foundation.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds gives preference to applicants who are just beginning their PhD work when they apply for the scholarship; preliminary results are not expected.
