This funds short-term visits by scholars based outside the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or the Netherlands to one of these countries. Visits under this scheme may be to consult libraries or archives and to exchange views or work with colleagues who have similar research interests. Study or lecture tours, meetings of a professional or vocational nature, workshops, symposia, and international congresses are normally excluded.
The award provides a contribution towards travelling expenses and, in some cases, subsistence expenses at approved rates. The maximum award under this scheme is £1500 (although a slightly higher limit may apply in the case of researchers from certain developing countries). Individual researchers are limited to no more than two awards with a minimum of 12 months between the first visit and the second. Successful applicants must make their own travel and visa arrangements.
Applicants need not be in academic life, but they will normally be expected to hold a doctorate or clinical qualification and have established a research interest in the history of medicine.
Wellcome Trust grant holders whose grants contain a travel allowance are not eligible to apply.
