Due: this is perpetual, applications may be submitted at any stage
Organisation: Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

description

The purpose of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds is the exclusive and direct promotion of basic research in biomedicine. The foundation supports projects aimed to experimentally elucidate basic phenomena of human life. Botanical and prokaryotic investigations are supported only if they are of general biological importance. Biotechnological development as well as studies on the course of diseases or the treatment of symptoms are not supported.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards travel allowances to support young scientists in acquiring experimental qualification necessary in basic research. Vocational training or the attendance of conferences, symposia, and workshops are not financed.

Travel allowances are intended to enable the recipients to visit laboratories further afield in order to study clearly defined techniques useful for their ongoing research and the work of their research group at home. In addition, these visits may be used by graduates from abroad as well as by their potential future Ph.D. supervisors to ensure that both parties have the necessary scientific and personal qualifications before the graduates begin their Ph.D. thesis.

In addition, the foundation supports participation in research-orientated courses and summer or winter schools where a selected number of participants learn clearly defined techniques in practicals as well as in lectures and discussions.

Travel allowances are awarded for a period up to three months; extensions are not possible. The grant expires if not taken up within six months.

The grant sum is based on the details given in the application and indicated in the official notification. The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds expects the home institution to continue to pay the applicant’s salary, while the host institute will cover his research related costs. Therefore, only a subsidy is awarded in the form of a flat-rate contribution which may cover the expenses for travel, lodging, and/or course fees.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds does not provide any kind of insurance; grant-holders must insure themselves and their families against any possible costs and consequences incurred by illness, accident, personal liability, etc.

Travel allowances are available to PhD students and postdoctoral scientists. PhD students should not be older than 30 years and postdoctoral scientists not over 32 years.

Nationality is irrelevant. European citizens are supported in Europe and overseas; non-European citizens receive support when working in Europe.
