The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study’s (NIAS’s) basic mission is to advance the study of the humanities and social sciences. Its primary objective is to offer a carefully chosen group of scholars an opportunity to devote themselves entirely to research.
The programme of the Lorentz Fellowships is a joint venture of NIAS and the Lorentz Center of Leiden University. The programme was established in 2005 to promote interdisciplinary research in the fields of the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Lorentz Fellowships are awarded to scholars who are engaged in fundamental research across the bounderies of these fields.
In addition to the fellowship, the Lorentz Fellow may be offered the opportunity to organise an interdisciplinary workshop, either in Wassenaar or in Leiden, on an agreed topic.
The Lorentz Fellowship carries a stipend, of which the exact amount will vary according to the rank, academic position, and present salary of the recipient, and also depends on other sources of income available to the fellow. Ideally, every fellow should be able to live in reasonable comfort while at NIAS, and the Institute and the Lorentz Center are willing to contribute considerably towards this goal. However, the costs-value of the stipend awarded will never exceed 50 percent of the gross salary paid to a researcher of equivalent rank in the universities of the Netherlands.
Holding a PhD degree is a prerequisite for eligibility.
