Divisions

Eight divisions comprise (by law) all different aspects of science. They are responsible for the funding task of NWO. Each division has a Board, consisting of scientists. The Boards are supported by an NWO Office.

• Earth and Life Sciences (ALW)
• Chemical Sciences (CW)
• Physical Sciences (EW)
• Humanities (GW)
• Social Sciences (MaGW)
• Medical Sciences (MW)
• Physics (N)
• Technical Sciences (TW), executed by the Technology Foundation STW

The divisions develop research programmes and organise granting procedures.

Foundations

The NWO organisation comprises two foundations.

• Netherlands National Computing Facilities Foundation(NCF)
• Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research (WOTRO)

These foundations differ in juridical status and origin from the Divisions. In practice, WOTRO has a comparable funding task and acts as a Division. NCF offers financial support for purchase and management of our nation’s super computers and other large-scale computer facilities.

Temporary Task Forces

Three so-called Temporary Task Forces execute ministerial policy. They have a semi-permanent status and are accommodated by NWO.

• Advanced Chemical Technologies for Sustainability (ACTS)
• Netherlands Genomics Initiative(NGI)
• National ICT Research and Innovation Authority (ICTRegie)

Secretariat

NWO houses one secretariat:

• European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)

NWO Research Institutes

Finally, NWO has nine Research Institutes across the country.

• Institute for Astronomical Research in the Netherlands (ASTRON)

• FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF)
