summary:

There is now compelling evidence that the agent causing variant CJD (cud) is identical to that causing bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The future numbers of cases that may occur in European countries cannot be predicted. It is essential to monitor this potential outbreak and to identify risk factors for the development of cud. Assay systems to test for the presence of disease-associated prionprotein in peripheral blood have been developed and it is essential to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of these tests in the identification of clinical and preclinical infection. The validation of such a test would have profound implications for the study of CJD epidemiology and for public health and a large series of cases is required. This proposal addresses both these objectives through the co-ordination and harmonisation of national CJD surveillance projects and in validating novel blood assay systems.
