The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Programme of the European Commission is among the largest ICT research initiatives in the world. Not only will it provide significant funding for joint European ICT research projects, but it will also offer enormous potential for cooperation amongst the international research community. In this talk we will provide an overview of the ICT programme and also discuss European Technology Platforms in the area of ICT as a new instrument for structuring and implementing research policies across European countries. Technology Platforms have been designed to bring together industry, research, and the public at the EU level to create significant impact and durable cooperation.
Dr Erich Prem was born in 1967 in Salzburg, Austria. He received his Masters and PhD in computer science from the Vienna University of Technology. He also holds an MBA from Donau University and a post-graduate degree in managerial economics. He has worked at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2001 he founded eutema, a consultancy firm that focuses on RTD services for ministries, research, industry, and the EC. He has been the programme manager of the largest Austrian information technology research programme, FIT-IT, for more than five years. He is an expert for the European Commission and a strategic adviser for the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology.
